Acting Workshop Dec 4

Workshop:  Laban Method for Actors

Los Alamos Little Theatre will offer a workshop and master class for actors on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016, at the Performing Arts Center, 1670 Nectar St., Los Alamos.
The workshop and class will focus on the Laban Method for Actors, based on the work of Rudolph Laban, described as a visionary, humanist, teacher,  choreographer and theoretician whose revolutionary ideas bridged the gap between the performing arts and science. The workshop will run from 10 am to 1 pm, and the master class from 2 to 4:30 pm. The cost of participation is $30, payable the day of the workshop. Registration is due Nov. 28. A registration form is available below and must be completed and e-mailed to cainelli@comcast.net for participation in the workshop.

Students who wish to also attend the master class must commit to memorizing a piece to be performed in the class.  The piece can be a monologue or a short excerpt from a play performed with other students.  Students must identify the piece for performance when they register; six pieces will be performed as part of the master class instruction.

The workshop and class instructor will be Ariana Karp, an alumna of London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.  Karp has a Master’s degree in Classical Acting for the Professional Theatre and Bachelor’s degree in theatre from Reed College. She is a founding member of the Ducdame Ensemble and an Associate Artistic Director of the International Shakespeare Center of Santa Fe. She also works with Stairwell Theater Company as an actor, dramaturge and assistant director and is a creator and producer of Tabling: The Podcast.

Laban (1879 – 1958) developed a theoretical framework that grew into what is now called Laban Movement Analysis, and created a training regimen that integrates voice and speech training with movement.  The first half of the workshop will focus upon Laban’s principles of human movement and how they may be applied to the actor’s craft.  The second half of the workshop will apply those principles to the human voice and speech. The master class, intended to demonstrate how the lessons from the workshop can be applied to real acting situations, will follow the workshop.  To be a student in the master class one must participate in the workshop and submit a request to LALT identifying what monologue or excerpt the student will memorize and perform.

The instructor will select up to six pieces to be performed; selected students will be notified in advance of the class. Any workshop participants who do not want to participate in the master class can stay and observe it. Members of the general public can also observe the master class for a fee of $5.00.   All proceeds from the workshop and master class will be paid to the instructor.
